If you need a break from the classics or you’re looking for a yummy side to go with your bacon and eggs, then read on!ย

Motherโ€™s Day is coming up and what better way to celebrate then by cooking a delicious brunch for the mums in your life. Thereโ€™s plenty to choose from, from savoury numbers like egg dishes and fritters to sweet recipes like almond flour pancakes and crepes. Whatever your mood is, there is something for everyone. Most of these recipes are dairy-free or dairy optional as well as being gluten-free. I havenโ€™t included any oats recipes as they arenโ€™t technically gf.ย 

Perfect brunch ingredientsย 

Below are some go-to healthy gluten free ingredients to use for breakfast or brunch recipes.ย 

Protein

  • sausageย โ€“ cook them up on the barbecue or in the oven for an easy protein add.ย 
  • smoked salmonย โ€“ goes perfectly with vegetable fritters of any kind and a dollop of Greek yoghurt and sour cream.ย 
  • chickpeasย โ€“ I love adding these into a shakshuka!
  • bacon or turkey baconย โ€“ I try to buy nitrate free where I can to make it more gut friendly.
  • eggsย โ€“ eggs are probably the most obvious breakfast protein, whether youโ€™re using them to mix up some pancake batter or youโ€™re making myย Spice It Up Baked Eggs with Vegetables, they are so versatile.

Carbohydratesย 

  • vegetablesย โ€“ of any kind! Add baby spinach to a frittata, use sweet potato in theseย sweet potato and broccoli fritters. The potatoes in theseย burrito bowlsย are next level!ย 
  • seasonal fruitย โ€“ adding seasonal fruit like berries, kiwi fruit or banana add complex carbohydrates that help to keep you fuller for longer.ย 
  • breadย โ€“ choose a good quality, wholemeal or wholegrain gluten free bread, gluten free muffins or gluten free bagels.ย 
  • wholegrainsย โ€“ if you canโ€™t have oats or oat flour then try buckwheat groats or buckwheat flour as a gluten free alternative. ย 

Healthy fats

  • nuts and seedsย 
  • nut and seed buttersย โ€“ tahini, almond butter, peanut butter and cashew butter are all delicious used to top chia puddings, pancakes or smoothies and add healthy fats and protein.ย 
  • toasted coconut
  • almond flourย 

Tips for creating the perfect brunch spreadย 

  • provide some savoury and sweet optionsย โ€“ your main dish might be fritters with smoked salmon and cream cheese, for example, but how about serving alongside some yoghurt and berries for a healthy brunch dessert?
  • serve your favorite toppingsย โ€“ if youโ€™re serving pancakes, chia pudding, yoghurt or smoothies, add your favourite toppings (like nuts, seeds and toasted coconut) to seperate bowls with serving spoons for your guests to choose from.ย 
  • donโ€™t forget the drinksย โ€“ place jugs of fresh juice or mocktails on the table so guests can help themselves throughout the meal.ย
