Cooking Tips
Making a simple roast chicken is quite straight forward, once you have it seasoned and pop it into the oven there isn't much else for you to do. This is the perfect time to prepare your sides! Here are some basic tips to get you started:
- work out the time that your chicken will be finished cooking and work backwards from then for when you need to start preparing your warm sides. This ensures that your sides are served warm and don't go cold while you wait for the whole chicken to finish roasting. For example, if your chicken will taken 2 hours and your side dish will take 30 minutes, start preparing the side dish once the chicken has been in for one and a half hours.
- a chicken needs a hot oven to roast perfectly. Choosing side dishes that require the oven to cook may slightly affect the cooking time of your chicken. That's not going to stop me from making delicious roasted Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes though, as they make for the perfect side dish for roasted chicken!
- pick sides based on the weather - if it's warm weather lean towards choosing cold sides and salads. If it's cooler weather then make comforting sides like mashed potatoes and gravy.
- using simple ingredients like olive oil or butter along with cracked black pepper, sea salt and some dried herbs is a great way to season the chicken.
I love that you can make a whole roasted chicken and sides for a wholesome mid week meal or for special occasions. Leftover chicken and sides also make for a delicious lunch the next day!
Basic Side Dishes
These are easy side dishes that can be made with minimal effort, either in your air fryer or oven.
Cold Side Dishes and Salads
Cold side dishes and salads are great to make ahead of time, particularly if you're wanting to get a high temperature in the oven for a nice crispy skin on the chicken. Salads using roasted vegetables make for a great side dish for roasted chicken. One of my favorites is a Roasted Red Potatoes Salad.
Stovetop Side Dishes
From a classic side like creamy mashed potatoes to a more modern take, like rice pilaf style salad. All of these tasty side dish recipes can be made on the stovetop, without using the oven.
Roasted Vegetable Side Dishes & Salads
Roast vegetables are the perfect complement to a whole roasted chicken. Roast potatoes, brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and squash are some of my favorite veggies to roast. Serve them as they are or make them into a simple salad. Add some baby spinach, feta cheese and a wholegrain mustard dressing.
Sauces
The go-to sauce for a roasted chicken has to be a classic gravy. I like to use my easy homemade chicken broth as a base for making gravy. Drizzle this simple lemon juice dressing over chicken, vegetables and salad.
