Jump to RecipeHello there smoothie weather. It's so nice to see you again! Banana smoothies are definitely nothing new and different but there are certainly some ways to make your delicious banana smoothie a little more balanced. These concepts apply to all meals and snacks really and it's quite simple. The way to a balanced snack is to have complex carbohydrates, proteins and good fats. Having all of these macro nutrients means that the meal/drink/snack will be digested more slowly and provide a long lasting energy.
This smoothie contains complex carbohydrates in the form of fruit (banana). While the almond butter & nut milk provides the protein and good fats. For a more traditional banana smoothie recipe, feel free to add cinnamon and nutmeg.
Hint: cinnamon helps to balance blood sugar levels, which promotes even longer lasting energy.
Benefits of Maca
Maca is native to Peru and is actually a cruciferous vegetable. The roots are more commonly used, dried and ground into a powder. Some of the benefits of Maca powder include:
- An increase in libido and sex drive.
- Increased energy.
- A potential improvement to brain function.
Maca tastes earthy and nutty while giving a flavour similar to malt.
If you have thyroid problems or are pregnant or breastfeeding then I would advise talking to your trusted health professional before consuming.
The Caramel Sauce
So the addition of caramel sauce is completely and utterly lux and unnecessary. But so delicious. To make the caramel sauce simply mix maple syrup with tahini 1:1. I used ½ cup each and now have some lovely caramel sitting in my fridge waiting for my next pancake or waffle day. You could use it on ice cream as well, which would be seriously amazing.
