If youโ€™re like me and tend to lean towards sweet breakfasts, then this list of Savoury Breakfast Recipes might just be what you need to get you inspired to start going for savoury. Or if you do love a savoury breakfast but youโ€™re getting bored of the same old thing everyday then there is plenty of new ideas here.ย

Ditch the banana smoothie or chocolate spread on toast and try a breakfast burrito, savoury oatmeal or make ahead breakfast sandwiches. There are so many healthy breakfasts to choose from. Iโ€™ve included a range of hearty breakfast options, lighter breakfast options and meal prep ideas for busy mornings.ย 

My go-to ingredients for savoury breakfast recipes

Proteins

  • baconย โ€“ I like to try and find a nitrate free and free range bacon to make this delicious food just a little healthier.ย 
  • eggsย โ€“ whether you use them to make scrambled eggs, poached eggs, boiled eggs, omelettes or frittata, there is no doubt that eggs are one of the most versatile breakfast ingredients.ย 
  • chicken and turkeyย โ€“ there are no rules that say turkey and chicken must only be eaten for lunch or dinner, branch out and throw some on a bagel or breakfast sandwich!ย 
  • beansย โ€“ beans are one of the best vegetarian protein sources and provide a great amount of fibre as well!ย 
  • cream cheeseย โ€“ with 6 grams of protein per 100 grams of cream cheese, it isnโ€™t super high in protein but a good way of adding a little extra to your breakfast.
  • cottage cheeseย โ€“ everyone is obsessed with cottage cheese right now because it is quite a good vegetarian protein source with 11 grams of protein per 100 grams.ย 
  • tofuย โ€“ scrambled tofu can be surprisingly tasty and a great way of getting in some plant based protein.ย 
  • hummusย โ€“ a great way of using hummus for breakfast is hummus on toast topped with some thick slices of tomato, added to a breakfast nourish bowl or spread onto a breakfast sandwich.ย 
  • salmonย โ€“ smoked salmon is the obvious choice for breakfast but you could also use salmon fillets as well. Add some cooked salmon to a frittata, bagel or to top scrambled eggs with for some added omega 3โ€™s.ย 

Carbohydratesย 

Try and opt for complex carbohydrates from whole grains as they are higher in fibre and provide more sustained long term energy.ย 

  • quinoaย โ€“ puffed quinoa or rolled quinoa are good breakfast options.ย 
  • oatsย โ€“ I often opt for rolled oats for breakfast but steel cut oats are a great option to and provide a lovely chewy texture.ย 
  • root vegetables & starchy vegetablesย โ€“ like sweet potato, potatoes, carrots and parsnip can be really great as a carbohydrate source for breakfast.ย 
  • veggiesย โ€“ all vegetables provide complex carbohydrates so load up on them for breakfast. Spinach, mushrooms, red pepper, cherry tomatoes and garlic are some of my savory breakfast favourites!ย 
  • breadย โ€“ whether youโ€™re choosing to use bagels, bread, pita or wraps, I always recommend opting for wholemeal, wholegrain and/or sourdough to help keep those blood sugar levels stable and increase fibre.ย 

Healthy Fats

To create a balanced meal, we need healthy fats. They help to reduce the glycemic index of a food and are essential for healthy hormones, skin, brain health and immunity.ย 

  • olive oilย โ€“ I use olive oil for frying, adding to dressings, making mayonnaise etc. Always opt for extra virgin olive oil.ย 
  • butterย โ€“ butter does have saturated fats but if you choose butter made from dairy from grass fed cows then you will also get some omega 3 and less omega 6.ย 
  • nuts & seedsย โ€“ nuts and seeds are filled with vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats so always include them in your diet! Add some toasted seeds to the top of your mushrooms and avocado toast or sprinkle over savory oatmeal.

The Best Chickpea Shakshuka

This chickpea shakshuka has a delicious spiced-up tomato sauce with perfectly cooked eggs. It is the perfect high protein breakfast, lunch or dinner โ€“ easy enough for mid-week meals and fancy enough to feed to your friends.

Feta, Chive and Carrot Savoury Muffins

These delicious carrot savoury muffins have pools of melted feta in every mouthful, a moist crumb and crisp seeded crust. They are the perfect make ahead breakfast on-the-go, savoury snack or light lunch.

This recipe makes quite a big batch that you can divide into individual portion sized containers and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 6 months!

Spice It Up Baked Eggs & Vegetables

These Spice It Up Baked Eggs with Vegetables are a one pan meal with a mix of veggies including, grape tomatoes, mushrooms and Spanish onion, tossed together with cumin seeds, paprika and chilli flakes (if you dare!) and roasted until juicy. You then create indents in the veggies to crack the eggs into and bake until the eggs are your version of perfect!ย

Healthy Baked Beans

This really is the best baked beans recipe and makes for a filling and wholesome breakfast. With a rich tomato sauce, they go perfectly over a piece of buttery toast.

These Butternut Squash Fritters with Sage are by far one of my favourite recipes with butternut squash. Served with a flavoursome Garlic Yoghurt Dipping Sauce, these butternut fritters make for a delicious savoury breakfast side. It might just become your favourite way of eating Butternut Squash as well!
