Everything You Need to Make Savoury Mince

Or refrigerate for up to 3 days for an easy, already done breakfast. Here are all of the easy to find ingredients that you need to make this recipe as well as any ingredient notes and substitutions. The full recipe is in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Ingredients

  • beef mince – I have only tested this recipe using beef mince but I think it would taste really good with lamb mince, pork mince or even turkey mince! Also, for my US friends, you know beef mince as ground beef. I recommend opting for lean mince to reduce saturated fats.
  • extra virgin olive oil – extra virgin olive oil is always my go-to oil for cooking as it is so nutritious!
  • carrot, celery & brown onion – these vegetables are finely diced and sautéed first to add extra flavour. You can also add extra veggies if you like. Broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, frozen mixed vegetables, peas and baby spinach would all work really well in this recipe!
  • tomato paste – also known as tomato concentrate.
  • dried thyme – you could swap dried thyme for dried Italian herbs or dried oregano.
  • sea salt flakes and cracked black pepper – I always prefer to use sea salt flakes over table salt as it is much healthier and less processed!
  • Worcestershire sauce – Worcestershire sauce helps to add a little tang, if you don’t have any you could add a dash of apple cider vinegar or even a little Dijon mustard. Also, just be cautious that if you are gluten intolerant or coeliac, some Worcestershire sauces do contain gluten so find a gluten free one.
  • pure maple syrup – this is just to add a little sweetness, you can swap maple syrup for honey.
  • beef broth – I prefer to use beef broth as it is rich in collagen boosting nutrients. You can definitely use beef stock in it’s place if preferred. Just keep an eye on the ingredients and try to find a broth or stock that is made from just vegetables and beef bones. A lot of broths and stocks have lots of additives, sugar and artificial colours!
  • garlic cloves – if you don’t have fresh garlic cloves then you can use jarred minced garlic.
  • bay leaves – fresh or dried is fine!
  • corn flour – corn flour can be swapped for tapioca starch or arrowroot.

To serve

You can serve the savoury mince anyway you like. I like to serve it over toast, topped with a fried egg, some tabasco and fresh herbs.

  • bread of choice to toast
  • tabasco sauce or red chilli flakes, if you like a little spice!
  • fresh chives or fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • fried egg

Other serving suggestions

  • make cottage pie – tip the savoury mince into a large baking dish and top with mashed potato and grated cheese and bake until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
  • use to fill a jacket potato
  • make a pie – line a pie dish with puff pastry, fill with the mince and place another sheet of puff pastry on top and bake in the oven until golden brown.
  • serve over pasta or rice

How to Make Savoury Mince

You really can’t get much easier then this recipe! Follow the instructions below to make the perfect savoury mince every time.

First, bring a large frying pan, large skillet or large shallow casserole pan to a medium heat. Add the olive oil and then diced carrot, brown onion and celery. Sauté the vegetables until the onion is translucent.

Use a spatula to push the mince to once side to create a pool of liquid. Add the corn flour to the pan, whisking straight away to avoid getting any lumps. Stir the mince back through the liquid and simmer on a low heat for 10 minutes to thicken the gravy.
