My kids have seriously been loving these choc chip oat energy balls. They taste like a choc chip cookie but made from healthy, whole food ingredients like oats, almond butter and naturally sweetened with maple syrup.

What I Love About Choc Chip Oat Energy Balls

  • quick & easy to prepare – this recipe takes just 15 minutes to make!
  • no blender required – everything comes together in one mixing bowl.
  • the perfect healthy snack – with healthy fats, protein, fibre and complex carbohydrates, these energy balls provide all of the nutrients you need for long lasting, sustained energy. No sugar crash here!

Ingredients Notes & Substitutions

This delicious no bake energy bites recipe is made using simple ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your pantry. Everything you need is listed below, including ingredient notes and possible swaps. The ingredient quantities are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • rolled oats – I’ve made these using wheat free oats, in the US these are sold as gluten free oats.
  • desiccated coconut – the second time I went to make these I had run out of desiccated coconut so I blended up some coconut flakes until it was a similar texture and it worked great!
  • almond butter – swap almond butter for any other nut butter like cashew butter or peanut butter a seed butter like sunflower seed butter or tahini.
  • pure maple syrup – Swap pure maple syrup for honey. Always choose pure maple syrup and not maple flavoured syrup, which is made using high fructose corn syrup and is not a healthy alternative.
  • vanilla extract
  • dark chocolate chips – use your favourite semi-sweet chocolate chips or swap for dark chocolate chopped up into chunks.
  • coconut flour or unflavoured whey protein powder – I have made these using with whey protein powder and coconut flour and both options work really well. If you want a little extra protein then choose the protein powder. If you’re needing this recipe to be dairy-free then choose a non dairy protein powder.
  • pinch sea salt flakes

How to Make Choc Chip Oat Energy Balls

Let’s get cooking! Well, mixing actually! To make this recipe, add the almond butter, maple syrup, salt and vanilla extract to a large mixing bowl and whisk well to combine.

To the bowl add the rolled oats, coconut, choc chips and coconut flour or whey protein powder. Stir well to combine and then take spoonfuls of the mixture using a spoon or cookie scoop. Roll the mixture into bite-sized balls. The mixture is much easier to roll at room temperature.

Place each ball onto a plate and then place into the refrigerator to chill. Transfer the chilled balls to an airtight container and store in the fridge for around one week. These energy balls freeze well, freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
