- coconut milk โ I use the coconut milk beverage and not canned coconut milk, as I think the canned coconut milk is a bit too rich for overnight oats.ย
- oat milkย

You can also use juice to make overnight oats like apple juice, pineapple juice or orange juice. If using juice I always opt for a cold pressed juice, not a reconstituted juice.
How to Make Overnight Oats Creamy Without Dairy
Overnight oats tend to have a creamy texture regardless of what milk you use thanks to the soaked rolled oats. However, there are some ways you can add a bit of creaminess to them.ย
- nut buttersย โ ike almond butter, peanut butter or cashew butter are great for adding that nutty flavour and creamy texture. For a nut free option, tahini is perfect.ย
- chia seedsย โ I love adding chia seeds to boost the nutritional value as well as thickening up the oats.ย
- flaxseedsย โ also known as linseeds. I often will use flaxseed meal to help thicken the overnight oats mixture. They are also great for adding fibre and plant based omega 3.ย
- coconut yoghurtย โ coconut yoghurt (made from coconuts, not coconut flavoured yoghurt) is a great way to make your overnight oats recipe super lush and creamy. You could also use other dairy free yoghurts like soy or cashew but my preference is coconut.ย
Add Flavourย
As I mentioned before, overnight oats can be so versatile with adding different flavour combinations and ingredients. Making overnight oats taste amazing is easy. Here are some of my favourite ways to add flavour to the overnight oats.ย
- vanilla extractย
- chocolate chipsย โ make sure to use dairy free chocolate chips, I prefer dark chocolate chips as they will often have less sugar and no dairy.ย
- pure maple syrupย โ I always tend to use maple syrup to sweeten the overnight oats but you could also use honey or agave syrup.ย
- nutsย โ roughly chopped nuts like almonds, pistachios and cashews.ย
- cacao or cocoaย โ for chocolate overnight oats you can add some cacao powder or cocoa powder to the mixture.ย
- cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
- fruitย โ I love adding fresh seasonal berries like blueberries, strawberries or raspberries.ย Stewed Applesย are also SO delicious mixed through overnight oats.ย
Are Oats Gluten Free?ย
There seems to be a lot of confusion out there as to whether or not oats are gluten free. In the US you can buy gluten free oats, however in Australia oats arenโt allowed to be labelled as gluten free. The oats in the US that are labelled gluten free are available in Australia labelled as โwheat free oatsโ or โnon-contaminated oatsโ. For anyone that is gluten intolerant, they may be able to tolerate the wheat free or non-contaminated oats as they are made in a factory which doesnโt produce any gluten containing grains.
Oats technically are naturally gluten free and itโs usually due through processing where they become contaminated with gluten due to other grains being processed on the same equipment. There is research to show though, that even uncontaminated oats contain a protein that is very similar to gluten and can cause the same immune response as gluten in people with coeliacs disease. This is why the โgluten freeโ oats can be fine for someone with an intolerance but not Coeliac Disease and why Australia wonโt allow oats to be labelled as gluten free.ย
How to Make Overnight Oatsย
Making overnight oats is a very simple process of adding your ingredients to individual jars or containers and transferring to the fridge to set. Despite the name, you donโt have to refrigerate overnight, they donโt take this long for the oats to soak up all of the liquid. They have this name because it makes sense to make up the oats the night before so that your breakfast is ready to eat in the morning.ย
