Ingredients Notes & Substitutions

Below is a list of all of the wholesome ingredients you will need to make this Chocolate Bliss Balls as well as any ingredient notes and possible substitutions. For the ingredient quantities and full recipe please see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Medjool dates – Medjool dates are the fresh dates that you find in the fresh produce section at the grocery store. I don’t recommend using regular dates as they are too dry to work properly in this recipe. You can buy
  • cacao powder – I tried these using cocoa powder instead of cacao powder and if you do use cocoa powder you would need to make some adjustments to the recipe. I would recommend using 1/4 cup cocoa powder (as opposed to 1/2 cup cacao powder) and less water. As cocoa powder is roasted it makes the bliss balls much darker in colour and much more chocolatey. Cacao powder is a bit more subtle in flavour and contains a higher amount of antioxidants.
  • desiccated coconut – I always opt for an organic desiccated coconut that has no preservatives. Regular desiccated coconut often contains sulphites, which I prefer to avoid where possible.
  • almond flour – you can also use blanched almond meal or hazelnut meal.
  • tahini – tahini can be swapped for a nut butter like almond butter, peanut butter or macadamia butter. Or another seed butter like sunflower seed butter.
  • vanilla extract – vanilla extract can be swapped for rose water or coffee, depending on your flavour preference.

Optional Extras

  • chocolate chips – stir through with a spoon after blending the mixture. About a 1/2 cup would do.
  • walnuts – stir a 1/2 cup chopped walnuts through the mixture after blending.

How to Make Chocolate Bliss Balls

Making these chocolate bliss balls is so simple. See the step-by-step instructions below.

First, add all of the ingredients to the drum of a food processor. Make sure you remove the pits from the dates first if they’re not already pitted!

Turn the food processor onto high and blitz the mixture until it clumps together in a big ball.

Take a heaped tablespoon or cookie scoop of the bliss ball dough and roll it into a ball. Roll the ball in extra desiccated coconut or chocolate sprinkles and then place into an airtight container. Repeat this process with the remaining mixture until all of the bliss balls have been rolled.

These are delicious, but I had a very difficult time getting the sprinkles to stick. I used different kinds to no avail. So, while they tasted yummy, they looked a little odd with a few stray sprinkled smooshed in.

Yeah they do take a bit of fiddling to get them to stick, desiccated coconut works really well for rolling them in!

Made this recipe with a couple of adaptations, using what I had on hand. I substituted cocoa powder for the cacao 1:1 and smooth peanut butter in place of the tahini. I needed to add about another 2-3 tbspns of water to bring the mix together after which they rolled beautifully and the coconut stuck nicely. Would try adding another couple of dates in place of the extra water to see if this works as well in bringing the mixture together. A lovely healthy addition to my sweet snack repertoire. Thankyou for sharing it with us.

These with peanut butter would be delicious! I’m so glad you enjoyed them. Dates can vary a lot in terms of how much moisture they have, adding a bit of extra water to bring it all together was a great idea!
