How To Make Chocolate Sauce

Honestly, you almost donโ€™t need a recipe for this one! Itโ€™s that easy to make. Just add your ingredients to a bowl and whisk to combine until smooth. Once itโ€™s nice and smooth your chocolate sauce is ready to use or store.

This recipe uses cacao powder, however you can make this chocolate sauce with cocoa powder if that is what you have on hand.

How to Store Dairy Free Chocolate Sauce

Store this chocolate sauce in an airtight jar or glass container in the fridge, with the lid on. This should keep well for around 2 weeks depending on the freshness of your ingredients.

Health Benefits

I love making recipes with tahini in them as it is a highly nutritious ingredient. Tahini is high in calcium, magnesium, protein and healthy fats to name just a few! If you happen to be following a plant based or vegan diet then maintaining adequate levels of calcium and protein in particular can be tricky. Incorporating a food like tahini into the diet regularly can help to reduce deficiency of these nutrients.

Cacao powder comes with its own excellent profile of nutrients including iron, protein, magnesium, potassium and fibre.

And finally maple syrup. Pure maple syrup (not to be confused with maple flavoured syrup) is one of my favourite sweeteners to use in cooking. This is because it is minimally processed and unrefined, unlike maple flavoured syrup which is made using artificial colours and flavours as well as high fructose corn syrup. It is important to remember that (pure) maple syrup, while healthier than refined sugars, still contains a high amount of sucrose and should be used sparingly.

Would you like to save this?

We’ll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

I choose to use maple syrup because:

  • it has a lower glycemic index than white sugar and therefore has a lesser impact on blood sugar levels.
  • maple syrup is minimally processed and doesnโ€™t use chemicals or bleach during processing.
  • it will supply the body with a small amount of minerals (unlike white sugar, which is essentially empty calories).

Serving Suggestions

Use this vegan chocolate sauce to:

  • drizzle over ice cream
  • dollop onto porridge or overnight oats
  • stir through chia pudding
  • make homemade chocolate milk

To make homemade chocolate milk simple add one tablespoon of chocolate sauce and 1 cup of your choice of milk to a jar. Place the lid on and shake vigorously until well combined. Enjoy as is or poured over ice. Yum!!

I canโ€™t wait to try this lovely source! But I was wondering, how would you alter the quantity/measurements of each ingredient if you wanted to have it as a spread on toast? Thank you so much.

Hi Nancy, this is quite a thick sauce so you could leave it is to use as a spread (awesome idea by the way!) or reduce the maple syrup a touch to create a thicker sauce. Tahini really varies in thickness too so try to use a tahini that is not too runny. I hope that helps ?

Oh this sauce looks delicious (and so easy to make)! Can’t wait to try this. Chocolate sauce on overnight oats sounds like the perfect brekkie.
