Itโ€™s no secret that I am a big fan of teriyaki sauce. It is so easy to make at home and livens up proteins and vegetables to create a delicious and quick meal. This uncomplicated sauce is made using simple ingredients that you can find at your local grocery store and can be used to make so many different dishes like rice bowls, stir fries, Asian inspired tacos, burgers and more. Iโ€™ve searched the web for the best recipes with teriyaki for you to help get you inspired to use this delicious sauce in your kitchen.

If youโ€™re looking for quick meals then teriyaki sauce is a great option.ย 

What is Teriyakiย 

Teriyaki sauce originates from Japan and is commonly used in Japanese cuisine. Teriyaki is a combination of two words โ€“ โ€œTeriโ€ meaning lustre or shine and โ€œyakiโ€ meaning grilled or broiled. Traditionally it is made using 2 parts soy sauce, 2 parts mirin, 2 parts sake and 1 part sugar. The ingredients are reduced over heat to create a thicker sauce that gives a lustre or shine to the food it is cooked with.ย 

Store Bought vs Homemade Teriyaki Sauceย 

You all know that I am a big fan of homemade everything. Store-bought teriyaki sauce might be delicious BUT it is usually filled with not so healthy ingredients like a whole lot of sugar, artificial colours and thickeners. I created aย gluten free teriyaki sauceย recipe, which isnโ€™t exactly authentic but it contains less sugar thanย authentic teriyaki sauce. As I mentioned before, traditional teriyaki sauce contains soy sauce, mirin, sake and sugar, while Iโ€™ve used tamari, rice wine vinegar, honey, water, pepper, ginger and garlic. I also use corn starch to create a thicker sauce. I love that teriyaki sauce is made using minimal ingredients and pantry staples that you most likely already have on hand.

Whether you are making the authentic version or my gluten free version, teriyaki is such an easy sauce to make at home. And it only takes only 5-10 minutes to make. Once you start making your own teriyaki sauce, youโ€™ll never go back to bottled teriyaki sauce.

How to Use Teriyaki Sauceย 

There are so many ways to use teriyaki sauce to make a delicious weeknight meal the the entire family will love. Some of my favourite simple recipes to make with teriyaki sauce are:

  • stir fries
  • rice bowls
  • tacos
  • sticky teriyaki chicken with white rice and vegetables, green onions and sesame seeds

You can use the sauce to marinade your protein in before grilling. Or you can grill your protein and then add the sauce at the end. Both ways are delicious.ย 

Alternatives to Using Tamari Sauceย 

โ€‹As I mentioned earlier, the traditional sauce to use in teriyaki is soy sauce. I prefer to use Tamari sauce as it tastes very similar to soy sauce, but a bit smoother. It is also naturally gluten free. Other alternatives to regular soy sauce are:

  • tamari
  • coconut aminos
  • low-sodium soy sauce
  • gluten-free soy sauce

Alternative Sweeteners for Teriyakiย 

I love using honey to sweeten myย gluten free teriyaki sauce, however there are other options. Here are some popular options for sweetening teriyaki sauce:

  • pineapple juiceย 
  • pure maple syrup
  • brown sugar or dark brown sugarย 
  • coconut sugarย

Easy Teriyaki Chicken โ€“ Gluten Freeย 

Learn how to make a quick and easy chicken teriyaki with perfectly cooked, tender chicken. This chicken teriyaki recipe uses skinless chicken breast but you can easily substitute for skinless chicken thighs. Teriyaki Ground Turkey Rice Bowls โ€“ Gluten Freeย 

With ground turkey and green beans fried in homemade teriyaki sauce, served over fluffy white rice with crunchy cucumbers and quick pickled red onions. These bowls are balanced with protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and fibre, everything you need for a healthy mid-week dinner.

Quick & Easy Teriyaki Beef Bowls โ€“ Gluten Free
